Without registry hack. It isn't that. Part of me suspects it may be Windows 10 Classic Shell interfering in some way. I know people who run Windows 10 without it and they don't have this issue. And it turns out I was right. The other XP option that does behave like I want is no longer available because apparently Microsoft broke it.
If I got it right this threat is about "automaticaly expanding" the folder tree in the left part of the Explorer, when clicking Folders in the right part of the Explorer. At least that was my issue when I started checking this. This did not work for me.
The issue is that individual files are not directly visible in the right pane under the folder in which they live. Selecting this option does nothing to change the split view of the folder in the left pane and the files in the right pane.
I have found no solution anywhere at all, and apparently Windows users just have to live with this? The only way I can see a classic file tree with the files visible directly under their folders in the SAME pane is if I open my text editor Atom or Brackets and use their navigation pane instead of File Explorer. Microsoft really blew it with this one.

Classic Shell only optionally restores this behavior but retains the Vista option. The default is Windows Vista option in fact.
You must have changed it to Windows XP Simple and are now complaining. How do I make it: - just show the folder contents in the right pane when I select a folder in the tree - only expand the folder when I tell it to - leave expanded folders expanded when I select a different folder in the tree in other words, behave like Windows Explorer? What I'm looking for is simply a way to remove a lot of clutter from the Navigation pane, those shortcuts that I had circled in the screenshot that I took--but I still like that navigation pane.
Click on your name under the users menu directly under Homegroup in the navigation pane on the left so that all the subfolders. You should then be able to delete them like any other file. Open Windows Explorer then click on the small diagonally-pointing arrow just to the left of "Libraries" to collapse the folder. Close Windows Explorer. Next time you open Windows Explorer, that folder will be displayed collapsed.
In other words, however you have the folders in the left-hand pane displayed when you close WE, that's how they will be displayed the next time you open WE. Miz ,. I do occasionally dip into my User account to get info on a browser profile. I'll just have to remember to click that account name on the left pane when I do that.
If you delete the ExpandedState registry value, the next time you open Explorer it will show the "default" tree state. I'm not aware of a better way to reset that information, or always show the default state. Maybe if you remove the "Set value" permission on that registry key for your user If this is what you want it to look like, then create a shortcut pointing to desktop, and use that to open explorer. Thanks Daniel, that's what I've been looking for.
I've created a batchscript to quickly set the new default state of the expanded folder-trees when starting Windows Explorer. Windows 7 has so many more problems than Vista it's mindblowing how many people ride that "trash Vista" bandwagon when I've found 7 to be worse in so many ways, including basic text painting.
If all you want is Explorer to open "clean" each time, then create a Powershell script with the following:. Office Office Exchange Server. Not an IT pro? Windows Client. Sign in. United States English.
