Refer to pattern interpretation. When handling gears, use care to avoid personal injury. Drive pattern moves deeper on the tooth flank contact and slightly toward the toe. Drive pattern moves toward the top of the tooth face contact and toward the heel. Chrysler 7. Chrysler 8. Chrysler 9. Dana 30 Ring Gear and Pinion Sets plus differential parts and positraction units.

Select from the following list to see detailed information on ring gear, pinion sets and other differential parts that we offer:. Positractions 4 Different types of differentials, whats the difference?
What rear end ratio do I have in my Ford is it posi! Need help finding the right parts for your vehicle? Get a Quick Quote.
Remove the old gear set and thoroughly clean both the ring gear carrier and rear end housing with solvent. After cleaning, air dry all parts.
Always verify that you have the correct gear ratio that you have purchased. The difference can be anywhere from a few mpg to several mpgs depending on how much of a smaller ratio you select. The fuel savings or increased acceleration advantages can be quite dramatic with a change in differential gearing. And you can select how much of a change you want with the large variety of sizes available on the market today from such rear end gear manufacturers as Richmond, Motive, and Strange Engineering to name a few.
However the biggest drawback is in installation and labor. Installing a new set of rear end gears is commonly known as one of the most difficult automotive tasks to accomplish. It requires precise measurements when lining up the contact area of the two gears and must be redone several times if they are not lined up properly. If the gears do not mesh correctly during setup, this will lead to premature wearing of the gears, excess friction in the driveline, and whining sounds coming from the rear end while driving.
The most commonly known rears with this type of carrier adjustment are the Chrysler 7. The GM 9. Any heavy use or overloading while the oil is extremely hot will cause it to break down and allow irreversible damage to the ring and pinion.
If the temperature of the oil and gears gets hot enough to change the molecular structure, it will soften the tooth surface instead of hardening it. The following procedure is generally accepted for breaking in a new gear set. Drive below 60 m. Avoid abusive situations for the next miles or so, and then have at it. If you take it easy on a new ring and pinion, and keep it full of high-quality oil, it will last a lot longer.
Different backlash pattern markings—correct and incorrect. Setting backlash is done using a dial indicator to measure the free movement of the ring gear. A typical set of gears comes with a marking compound. This compound is used to show what the pattern actually is on the ring gear while adjusting the backlash.
In this image, the pinion depth is too deep too far into the housing and needs more shims. This is shown by the wear pattern on the inside of the teeth. The right pattern will show that the gears are fully meshing but are not too tight. Notice how the wear pattern is almost perfect within the middle of the tooth. This rear end uses adjusters arrow , to reposition the differential, and set backlash. They work by tightening one side and loosening the other side to move the differential sideways.
If your rear end does not use adjusters, then you need to adjust backlash by using shims. By placing various thickness shims on either side of the differential, you can adjust backlash.
