Numlock, scroll lock, and caps lock lights all light up steady when keyboard is plugged back in. Tried all safe boot options, and none of them let me use the keyboard. Tried to use last known good, no effect. Once I'd done that, I could use 'R' for the recovery console.

I followed the instructions on Technet article Q, with no effect. I reset my BIOS to defaults, and even tried reflashing it with no effect. What does it say in the device manager in Windows for the keyboard? I did try another keyboard, no change. Obviously I can't see what keyboard driver is loaded when I can't log into the system. The keyboard works in BIOS. I am able to boot into Safe Mode and Safe Mode With Networking but in every instance I am unable to use my keyboard at the login screen.

Boot from XP CD 2. At the menu, press R to load the Recovery Console. Overwrite: Y It overwrites one file and fixes the problem. The Hound. Joined May 27, Messages 3, Does the TAB key do anything? Do you have an XP CD for the machine--if I can find the name of the keyboard driver file, we may be able to rename the old one and extract a fresh copy from the recovery console.

Worst case, you'd probably need to do a repair install--that would preserve your data and most likely fix the keyboard issue Thanks for the response! Which files would I need to copy and how do I do it?

Also if that doesnt work, would a complete repair install cause all my installed programs to no longer work? A missing registry key caused by an uninstall can cause what you're seeingdid you uninstall any applications just before you the issue started to occur?

Well my computer had a trojan so I was doing malware scans. I uninstalled a program called " FasterFox ", which is a "typing expander" that I never used. I uninstalled a program called "Prevx", which I had just installed to scan for rootkits. And I also cleared my Temp folder. Sorry this didn't help.

The keyboard and mouse do not work in safe mode or safe mode with command prompt. Power is removed from keyboard and mouse within 1 second of the XP flash screen appearing, so the BIOS is no longer used to communicate with them, which is normal.

I have tried renaming the unsigned driver, but then it complains it cannot find it and still will not let the ICH9 driver load.

Is there any way of disabling the coinstalled driver? I can't find anything in the Knowledge Base for coinstall. I have a backup I could use, but I can't find anything which tells me how to restore from a backup without being able to start XP. Is there a Registry setting to tell the Found New Hardware wizard just to go ahead without prompting?

It doesn't seem to be possible to boot from it. I just get a blank screen, although there is a long period of disk activity.

Are upgrade disks not bootable? Any ideas?
